London Weekend Breaks

what is good place to drive to during weekend for short break from london?
some friends suggested brighton, oxford etc. probably prefer somewhere between 1-2 hrs drive. what’s your personal suggestion? thanks!
The Towns around London, which have more than just a Pizza Hut, KFC, Burger King and McDonald’s on their High Streets. Places which still managed to keep some character:
- Canterbury
- Sevenoaks (almost)
- Royal Tunbridge Wells
- Windsor
- Kingston
- Hastings
- Lewes
- St. Albans
- Oxford
- Cambridge
- Saffron Walden
- Colchester
and possibly:
- Southend on Sea (for the longest pier in Britain if not in the world, with a railway running its length)
- Rochester (with an interesting castle and cathedral and interesting Docks in Chatham – with a submarine and one of the longest rooms in the world to see)
But for something unusual go for:
- Waddesdon Manor (near Oxford) – a piece of France (a whole chateau belonging to Rotschild family with grounds and a village) in the middle of England. If you combine with shopping in a very unique and cute Bicester Village (http://www.bicestervillage.com/) – should make it a perfect Sunday/Saturday
- Denbies Vineyard – a piece of Tuscany just outside London (Surrey). Just click on http://www.denbiesvineyard.co.uk/ to be really surprised.
A good thing to do is also to join the National Trust or English Heritage – you’ll get a great guide with suggestions of different estates to see around England and a free access to them.
Enjoy!
A.
